The region has been inhabited for hundreds of years by the Purépecha Indians and also Tarascos. Many years ago it was officially founded by Antonio de Mendoza, in 1541, and he named it La Villa de Valladolid, in honor of the Spanish city of the same name. In 1580, Valladolid Fray Antonio de San Miguel built the beautiful Aqueduct which we can see today.

After the Mexican War of Independence, the city was renamed Morelia in honor of José Maria Morelos y Pavón, who is from Morelia and was a Mexican Roman Catholic priest. Furthermore he led the Mexican War of Independence movement, assuming its leadership after the execution of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1811.

Morelia has a lot of beautiful constructions such as: the cathedral, the aqueduct, the rose garden, el Callejon del Romance, “La Casa de la Cultura," and many other churches, each one of which has its own history and fame.
